Bank impersonation scams target residents in Poland
Police in Poland are warning citizens about a recurring telephone scam involving individuals impersonating bank employees to steal life savings.
In Elbląg, a 73-year-old woman lost 90,000 PLN after scammers convinced her that her funds were at risk and required immediate transfer to ‘secure’ technical accounts. In a separate incident in Zabrze, a 50-year-old woman lost approximately 6,000 PLN using a similar tactic.
Authorities note that criminals use professional language and create a sense of urgency to prevent victims from verifying the information. They also warn that caller ID can be manipulated to appear as a legitimate institution. Police advise that bank employees will never ask customers to transfer money to other accounts for security purposes or request sensitive data such as passwords and authorization codes.
