Bank Indonesia maintains BI Rate at 5.75% to stabilize rupiah

Bank Indonesia (BI) has decided to maintain its benchmark BI Rate at 5.75 percent during its September 2026 Board of Governors Meeting. The decision, announced by Governor Destry Damayanti, aims to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate amid significant global financial market uncertainty and high external pressures. Other interest rates, including the Deposit Facility at 4.75 percent and the Lending Facility at 6.50 percent, were also maintained.

Domestic inflation in August 2026 was recorded at 3.19% year-on-year, an increase from 2.88% in July. While this rise was driven largely by volatile food prices such as chicken, chili, and rice, it remains within the central bank's target range of 2.5% ± 1% for 2026 and 2027.

In terms of economic indicators, banking credit grew by 13.65% year-on-year in August 2026. Bank Indonesia also reported a US$0.12 billion surplus in the balance of payments for July 2026, a recovery from a US$0.45 billion deficit in June. The central bank projects Indonesia's economic growth for 2026 to fall between 4.9% and 5.7%.
