Bank Indonesia sees major growth potential in sharia economy

Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti highlighted Indonesia's significant potential to expand its sharia-based economy and finance. Speaking at the Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) 2026, Damayanti noted that Indonesia currently maintains fourth place globally in the State of the Global Islamic Economy report.

Damayanti emphasized that sharia finance offers universal values such as inclusivity, sustainability, and fairness, making it relevant even in countries with smaller Muslim populations. She observed a shift in investor preferences toward sharia instruments, particularly sukuk, due to their stability and the presence of underlying assets.

This growing interest from global investors includes those from non-Muslim majority regions such as the United States and Europe. To capitalize on this, the Indonesian government continues to issue global sukuk and has successfully accumulated US$7.7 billion in Green Sukuk issuances on the global market since 2018, alongside Rp108.9 trillion in the domestic market.
