Bank Negara Malaysia maintains OPR at 2.75 percent
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has maintained the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 2.75 percent for the ninth consecutive time since July 2025. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) determined that the current rate is appropriate to support sustainable economic growth while ensuring price stability.
Economic indicators suggest strong growth momentum in the third quarter of 2026, supported by robust export performance and steady domestic demand. Malaysia's economy is projected to grow by more than five percent this year, with a strong economic foundation expected to support resilience into 2027. The external sector is anticipated to be a primary driver of growth next year, fueled by global technology cycles and strong tourism spending.
Inflation is projected to rise to 2.0 percent in 2026 and 2.2 percent in 2027, largely driven by supply-side factors. While growth remains strong, risks include geopolitical tensions, potential US tariff increases, and fluctuations in commodity production. MBSB Investment Bank Bhd has raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to between 5.3 and 5.4 percent, up from a previous estimate of 5.1 percent.
