Bank of Algeria seeks to narrow dinar exchange rate gap

The Bank of Algeria faces the critical challenge of narrowing the gap between the official exchange rate of the dinar and the rates observed in the parallel currency market. This issue is a priority for the incoming governor, Mohand Bourai. Addressing the disparity is complex, as the currency's value is influenced by inflation, foreign exchange reserves, the balance of payments, and trade levels rather than simple administrative decisions.

To manage this, the central bank must balance market intervention with the need to preserve foreign exchange reserves, which are vital for meeting external commitments and managing economic shocks. The bank has several monetary policy tools available, including the key interest rate, to influence the economy and indirectly affect the exchange rate.

Concurrently, Algeria is navigating a period of leadership changes at the Bank of Algeria and the Ministries of Finance and Industry. Economists note that these new officials must coordinate closely on major state projects, such as the Bled el Hadba phosphate hub, the El Hadjar steel complex renovation, and the Ghar Djebilet mining site. This coordination is essential to manage public investment, budget deficits, and national debt while encouraging local production and reducing imports.
