Bank of Canada reports C$500B in private credit exposure

Canadian financial institutions have accumulated approximately C$500 billion in private credit exposure, according to an analysis by the Bank of Canada. While domestic use of private credit by Canadian businesses remains stable and relatively limited, Canadian asset managers have established a significant presence in global markets.

Most of this exposure is concentrated in US markets. The holdings are distributed across several sectors: pension funds hold roughly C$215 billion, life insurers hold over C$200 billion, investment funds hold about C$54 billion, and banks carry at least C$40 billion. Many of these institutions prefer direct lending over pooled investment vehicles.

The Bank of Canada notes that while the focus on investment-grade assets may lower the overall risk profile, the lack of regulatory oversight in the private credit sector raises concerns regarding financial stability. Specifically, the report flags potential spillovers if US borrowers face distress, as the high level of geographic concentration could transmit global credit stress to the Canadian economy.
