Bank of Cyprus faces scrutiny over electronic payment adoption
Bank of Cyprus is facing questions regarding its stance on new electronic payment infrastructures in Cyprus. While four other major banking institutions have expressed support for the adoption of the IRIS instant payment system, market reports suggest the Bank of Cyprus is opposing its implementation.
This resistance raises concerns about competition and the pace of technological evolution in the Cypriot economy. The issue is compounded by the bank's historical role in JCC Payment Systems and its recent loss of the contract to manage electronic payments for the Republic of Cyprus following a lengthy legal process.
Calls have been made for the Cypriot government, the Central Bank, and the Competition Protection Committee to investigate whether the bank's commercial interests are hindering innovation and increasing transaction costs for businesses and citizens.
