Bank of England faces rate hike pressure amid UK growth

Financial markets are increasingly pricing in significant interest rate hikes from the Bank of England, with some projections suggesting up to one percentage point of increases over the next year. This shift follows stronger-than-expected UK economic growth, which saw GDP rise by 0.4% in July, and surging energy prices driven by Middle East tensions.

While some analysts expect the Bank of England to hold rates steady in the immediate term, the combination of resilient economic activity and rising oil prices has heightened inflationary concerns. Long-dated UK government bond yields have reached their highest levels since 1998, reflecting investor apprehension regarding persistent inflation.

Despite these market pressures, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has maintained a wait-and-see stance, suggesting that current aggressive market pricing may include a large risk premium. While headline inflation rose to 2.9% in July due to energy price caps, core inflation has remained flat at 2.6% for three consecutive months.
