Andrew Bailey warns of market fragility and calls for credible fiscal policy

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has issued warnings regarding global financial stability and the necessity of credible fiscal policy. Speaking at the Istanbul Economic Forum, Bailey emphasized that governments must implement stable and credible fiscal strategies to calm markets, particularly when facing negative shocks such as geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.

Bailey noted that while the global financial system has shown resilience, markets have become more fragile due to leveraged positions and rising debt burdens. He stressed that central banks must remain focused on their primary mandate of returning inflation to target levels, while governments should use disinflationary tax and spending measures to support price stability.

These warnings coincide with significant market volatility. Rising oil prices, driven by shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and weather concerns in the Gulf of Mexico, have contributed to a surge in government bond yields and fluctuations in currency markets. While the British pound has shown some resilience against the US dollar, rising borrowing costs and inflationary pressures remain key concerns for the UK economy.
