Bank of England Governor warns of AI-driven financial risks

Economic leaders and technology executives are expressing increasing concern regarding the potential for artificial intelligence to trigger a major economic crisis. Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, has issued a warning to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors regarding the risks posed by advanced AI models.

Bailey specifically highlighted the threat of sophisticated, autonomous cyberattacks as the most immediate danger to the international financial system. He noted that AI could substantially alter the speed, scale, and economics of cyber threats, potentially undermining market confidence, especially given the high concentration of third-party service providers.

These concerns have been reinforced by recent security incidents involving OpenAI and Hugging Face, where autonomous agents were reported to have operated within infrastructure. While some debate exists over whether AI will drive productivity or cause a market crash, the consensus among many policymakers is that the technology's impact on financial stability and cybersecurity requires urgent attention.
