FTSE 100 climbs toward 11,000 as BoE holds rates at 3.75%
The Bank of England left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75% after a 6‑3 split vote, signalling a cautious stance amid global geopolitical tension.
British equities rose in response. The FTSE 100 touched an intra‑day high of about 10,979 points and opened the next session 21.9 points higher at 10,930.33, later closing at 10,897.27. Momentum was supported by a rally in technology and defence stocks, higher oil prices and a surge in defence orders linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.
Rolls‑Royce posted a 46% jump in operating profit, sending its share price up roughly 4% and helping lift the index. In contrast, pest‑control group Rentokil Initial slumped more than 17% after warning that growth in its North‑American market was below expectations. Brent crude futures rose 2.13% to $92.67 a barrel, adding further buoyancy to energy‑related shares.
Overall, the market’s gains reflected a blend of solid earnings, a steady UK monetary policy stance, and external factors such as higher commodity prices and heightened defence spending.
