Bank of England interest rate hike speculation strengthens British pound
The British pound has strengthened as market expectations shift regarding the Bank of England’s monetary policy. Recent labor market data suggests a recovery that may prompt the Bank of England to consider interest rate hikes during its November meeting. According to the Office for National Statistics, average weekly wages (excluding bonuses) rose by 3.7 percent in the three months leading up to August, up from 3.4 percent earlier this year.
While the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent for the quarter ending in August, some indicators show signs of cooling. The number of job vacancies dropped to 691,000 in the quarter ending in September, falling below the 700,000 threshold for the first time since early 2021. Analysts suggest this decline could be driven by high labor costs and the impact of artificial intelligence on hiring demand.
The pound’s recent gains are also attributed to diverging policy paths between the Bank of England and the U.S. Federal Reserve. While the Fed maintains a cautious approach, the Bank of England faces pressure from persistent inflation and energy costs, leading markets to price in a potential 25 basis point rate increase in November.
