Bank of England officials warn energy shocks may force interest rate hikes

Bank of England officials have warned that persistent energy price shocks could necessitate further interest rate hikes to combat rising inflation. Governor Andrew Bailey stated that high energy costs make it increasingly difficult to maintain current interest rate levels.

Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden indicated that if inflationary pressures continue to rise, there may be valid reasons for additional tightening. This follows a recent Monetary Policy Committee decision to hold the Bank Rate at 3.75% with a 6-3 vote. Ramsden noted that while domestic pressures have been relatively contained, the global inflationary outlook presents significant upside risks.

The Bank has projected that inflation could rise to approximately 3.7% in the fourth quarter of this year and reach 4.2% by the first quarter of 2027. Additionally, the Bank is proceeding with quantitative tightening, which includes the sale of UK government bonds (gilts) with maturities ranging from 2033 to 2049.
