Bank of Ghana announces all 23 domestic banks are fully capitalised

The Bank of Ghana has confirmed that all 23 banks operating in the country are now fully capitalised. Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama announced the milestone during the 2026 CEOs Connect event, organized by the Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Asiama stated that the banking sector has become more robust and resilient, noting that banks are maintaining sound liquidity positions and improved asset quality, which has strengthened their balance sheets. This development follows years of financial sector pressures and reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.

The Governor emphasized that the current stability should be leveraged to drive productive investment, private sector growth, higher exports, and employment. He also encouraged banks to increase their participation in the capital market to access long-term funding and suggested diversifying financing sources through options such as trade finance, private equity, and green financing to support business expansion.
