Bank of Ghana Governor cites inflation outlook for rate decisions
Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama stated that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) determines policy rate decisions primarily by assessing the inflation outlook rather than relying solely on current figures. The committee evaluates future inflation trends, potential risks, and emerging economic developments to guide its decisions.
Dr. Asiama noted that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East recently altered the committee’s trajectory. While he had initially expected to continue an easing cycle, developments in the Middle East raised concerns that end-of-year inflation could be affected, leading to the decision to maintain the current policy rate to prevent further price increases.
Additionally, the Governor explained that the MPC has transitioned to a majority decision-making process rather than seeking a consensus. This shift is intended to allow members to express individual positions and maintain independence without being constrained to fall in line with a single view.
