Bank of Ghana Governor urges fiscal discipline to sustain economic gains

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has emphasized that continued fiscal discipline and expenditure restraint are essential to preserving the country’s recent economic gains and strengthening investor confidence. Speaking to commercial bank leaders in Accra, Dr. Asiama noted that prudent debt management is critical to reducing fiscal risks to the macroeconomic outlook.

Ghana’s economic performance in the first quarter of 2026 showed real GDP growth of 6.4%, up from 6.2% in the same period of 2025, driven primarily by the industrial and services sectors. Additionally, gross international reserves reached US$12.9 billion by the end of June 2026, providing approximately 5.0 months of import cover.

Despite these positive indicators, the Governor raised concerns regarding the high level of non-compliance involving the issuance of dud cheques. He urged commercial banks to enhance their monitoring mechanisms and customer engagement to maintain confidence in the banking system.
