Bank of Ghana official warns fake financial news threatens economic stability
Bernard Otabil, Director of Communications for the Bank of Ghana, has warned that fake financial news and misleading reports pose a significant threat to economic stability and Ghanaian households. Speaking at a three-day training workshop for the Bank of Ghana Press Corps in Accra on October 19, 2026, Otabil emphasized that inaccurate reporting on inflation, exchange rates, and monetary policy can trigger market panic and fuel speculation.
Otabil noted that because the public often relies on headlines rather than full reports to make economic decisions, the ethics of financial journalism are vital. He described accuracy as an ‘economic asset’ and stressed that ethical reporting grounded in verification and context serves as a primary defense against disinformation.
The workshop aims to build a well-informed media by covering topics such as the Bank’s regulatory role, the domestic gold purchase programme, and the interpretation of Monetary Policy Committee statements.
