Greece faces economic pressures from rising energy and fuel costs

Greece is navigating significant economic challenges driven by rising energy and fuel prices. In September, fuel and lubricant prices for private transport in Greece increased by 23.2% compared to the previous year, with the annual rate of increase accelerating by 9.5 percentage points in just two months. This surge follows a broader trend in the European Union, where fuel and lubricant prices rose by 31.4% year-on-year.

The energy crisis is also impacting the maritime sector. Fuel costs for ferry companies have escalated, with the cost for a single Rafina–Mykonos route jumping from 19,000 to 40,000 euros. To prevent ticket price hikes, the Greek government is considering subsidies covering 60% to 70% of these additional fuel costs.

In the broader economy, the Bank of Greece projects 2% growth for 2026, despite an expected inflation rate of 3.5%. While the country has seen a strong increase in electricity exports—reaching 9.24 terawatt-hours in the first eight months of 2026—households are feeling the squeeze. Real disposable income has declined as inflation absorbs nominal gains, even as net household wealth has risen due to increasing property values.
