Bank of Italy Governor Panetta warns of geopolitical impacts on global economy

Fabio Panetta, Governor of the Bank of Italy, addressed the 114th meeting of the Development Committee of the World Bank and IMF in Bangkok. He warned that geopolitical tensions, conflicts, and economic fragmentation are playing an increasingly decisive role in the global economy.

Panetta noted that in 2026, disruptions in the supply of energy, fertilizers, and logistics networks fueled inflation, weakened consumer confidence, and limited consumption. He emphasized that these economic effects fall disproportionately on emerging markets and developing economies (EMDE), which face limited financial reserves and less diversified energy sources, hindering their ability to absorb shocks and stalling development progress.

In response, the Bank of Italy's Governing Board expressed strong support for the World Bank Group's efforts to eradicate poverty and promote inclusive growth. Panetta advocated for innovative solutions involving investments in human capital, infrastructure, improved access to financing, and solid social protection systems, while integrating climate action, good governance, transparency, and gender equality into development strategies.
