Bank of Italy warns of rising digital finance crime as Italy embraces digital transformation

Enzo Serata, director of the Financial Intelligence Unit at the Bank of Italy, highlighted in the annual report that the rapid spread of digital tools such as cryptocurrencies, virtual IBANs, digital payment cards and non‑bank ATMs is making money‑laundering harder to trace. He noted a concurrent surge in online fraud targeting both individuals and businesses and called for stronger supervisory systems and advanced analytical tools to keep pace with sophisticated criminal methods.

Matteo Veneziani, Chief Digital Transformation Officer of PwC Italy, explained that the firm's internal digital agenda now involves a team of nearly 200 professionals covering technology innovation, cyber‑security, and change management. He described the shift from a purely technical IT function to a broader transformation role that includes cultural mediators who translate business needs into technical specifications, and emphasized the importance of change‑management capabilities to ensure successful adoption of new digital processes across the organization.
