Bank of Japan guidelines for exchanging damaged banknotes
Damaged Japanese banknotes, such as those torn during laundry, may still hold value according to Bank of Japan standards. If a 10,000 yen note is torn, its exchange value depends on the remaining surface area.
If two-thirds or more of the note remains, it can be exchanged for its full value. If between two-fifths and two-thirds remains, it can be exchanged for half its value (5,000 yen). If less than two-fifths remains, the note loses all value.
To preserve value, it is advised not to forcefully pull apart wet or stuck notes, as this can cause further tearing. Fragments can be taped together to increase the total measurable area. Exchanges can be handled at Bank of Japan branches or through private financial institutions.
