Bank of Japan signals potential rate hikes amid inflation risks

The Bank of Japan is expected to maintain its policy rate at 1.25% during its upcoming meeting on October 29–30. However, analysts and officials suggest the central bank is shifting its focus from stimulating prices to containing inflation, which has approached its 2% target.

Former Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda has expressed support for further rate hikes to reach neutral economic levels, while former deputy Masazumi Wakatabe has urged caution, citing low real economic growth. Market participants are closely watching for a hawkish signal that could influence the yen's value and impact global carry trades, potentially triggering the sale of US equities and Treasuries.

Inflation data remains a key driver, with core inflation reported at 2.4% in September 2026. While the bank may pause this week to assess previous hikes, a rate increase in December or January is considered a strong possibility by many economists.
