Bank of Korea holds benchmark interest rate at 3.00%

The Bank of Korea (BoK) Monetary Policy Board decided to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 3.00% per annum during its meeting on the 22nd. This decision follows two consecutive rate hikes in July and August, serving as a pause to assess the impact of previous tightening measures on the economy.

While the rate remains unchanged, the BoK maintains a restrictive stance due to persistent inflationary pressures. Consumer price inflation was recorded at 2.9% in September, while core inflation stood at 2.8%, both remaining above the central bank's 2% target. Economic growth remains robust, supported by a surge in semiconductor exports, which helped monthly exports exceed $120 billion in September.

Key variables for future policy decisions include the stability of the won-dollar exchange rate, rising household debt, and real estate price trends in the Seoul metropolitan area. Economists largely anticipate a potential rate hike in November to further stabilize prices, with some projecting rates could reach 3.5% or higher by early next year.
