Bank of Korea signals potential interest rate hikes

Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song indicated that the central bank will determine the timing and pace of potential additional interest rate hikes by closely monitoring inflation, economic trends, and financial stability. During a National Assembly audit on the 12th, Shin noted that while the economy is expected to maintain steady growth—driven by a strong semiconductor sector and rising exports—inflation is projected to remain above the 2% target for a significant period due to cost pressures and demand-side factors.

Regarding financial stability, the Governor highlighted concerns over rising housing prices in the Seoul metropolitan area and increasing household debt. While the domestic financial system remains stable due to resilient institutions, the Bank of Korea emphasized the importance of preemptive responses to prevent the spread of inflation.

Economic outlooks suggest that despite uncertainties in the Middle East and global AI investment trends, the semiconductor industry will continue its expansion. However, the Bank warned of volatility in financial and foreign exchange markets caused by rising international oil prices and interest rate expectations in major economies.
