Bank of Korea raises interest rate to 3.00%
The Bank of Korea has raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.00%, marking the second consecutive increase and the first back-to-back hike in approximately three years and seven months. The decision, led by Governor Shin Hyun-song, was driven by persistent inflationary pressures—specifically core inflation, which reached 2.6% in July—and the need to maintain financial stability amid rising household debt and surging housing prices in the Seoul metropolitan area.
Alongside the rate hike, the central bank significantly upgraded its economic outlook. Citing robust semiconductor exports fueled by global AI infrastructure demand, the Bank of Korea raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 3.3% from a previous 2.6%. The 2027 growth forecast was also revised upward to 2.9% from 2.1%. While headline inflation showed signs of cooling, the bank maintained its consumer price inflation forecasts at 2.7% for 2026 and 2.3% for 2027, noting that prices are expected to remain above the 2% target for a considerable period.
