Bank of Mauritius announces 6% state-guaranteed retirement bond
The Bank of Mauritius has announced the upcoming launch of the ‘Fifteen-Year Government of Mauritius Retirement Savings Bond’. This state-guaranteed investment offers an annual return of 6%, with interest paid semiannually on March 15 and September 15.
Subscriptions are exclusively available to Mauritian residents aged between 50 and 65. The investment period begins on October 15 and is scheduled to close on December 23, unless the government decides to close the window earlier. Investors must commit a minimum of Rs 100,000, in multiples of Rs 100,000, up to a maximum cap of Rs 2 million per person. The bond will reach maturity on October 15, 2041.
The product includes a minimum holding period of five years. While early withdrawal is permitted before this period ends, interest will be recalculated at either 4.5% or the prevailing market rate, whichever is lower. Additionally, the bond is non-transferable, cannot be used as collateral, and cannot be held jointly. In the event of the investor's death, the net proceeds will be transferred to legitimate beneficiaries.
