Bankaipur Sub-election Win Signals Shift to Merit-Based Voting in Bihar

The recent sub‑election in Banki Pur, Bihar, resulted in a victory for Jan Suraj candidate Prashant Kishor. Congress MP Harish Meena hailed the outcome as “India’s democratic win,” emphasizing that voters chose based on merit rather than caste or religion. He added, “People have realized they should vote on competence, not on religion or caste.”

Bihar BJP leaders, including state president Sanjay Saravgi and minister Ramkripal Yadav, criticised Kishor for reneging on promises, notably his pledge to turn Banki Pur into “Bangalore.” Yadav said, “Prashant Kishor is a good person, but he must answer for the promises he made, such as ‘I will make Banki Pur a Bangalore.’” The statements reflect political tension over the election result and its implications for future campaigning in the region.
