Bankers in Brazil initiate strikes against public institutions
Bank employees across Brazil are initiating widespread strikes following the rejection of salary and benefit proposals during the 2026 national campaign. The labor movement is primarily targeting public institutions, including Caixa Econômica Federal, Banco do Brasil, and Banco do Nordeste.
In several states, workers have approved indefinite strikes. In Paraíba, employees at both Caixa and Banco do Brasil rejected current proposals, with Caixa workers voting for a strike by 65.18%. In Bahia, rejection rates were high, with 97.52% of Caixa employees and 83.82% of Banco do Brasil employees opposing the terms. In Acre, workers approved a strike for public banks scheduled to begin September 11.
Conversely, employees at private banks have largely accepted the proposal presented by the National Federation of Banks (Fenaban). This proposal includes full INPC inflation replacement plus a 0.60% real increase for both 2026 and 2027. In Rio Grande do Norte, private bank workers ended a brief strike after approving this Fenaban agreement, though they expressed dissatisfaction with the low percentage of the real increase.
The strikes are expected to impact in-person services at various branches, though digital channels, ATMs, and electronic banking services are expected to remain operational. Caixa Econômica Federal has formally requested the reopening of negotiations to prevent the strikes from disrupting essential services.
