Banking complaints rise in Mexico as Spain prepares new consumer defense authority
In Mexico, specifically in Tamaulipas, banking institutions account for 60% of consumer complaints reported to CONDUSEF between January and May. The total number of claims in the region rose by 23.9% compared to the same period in 2025. Primary grievances include unrecognized electronic transfers, unauthorized consumption, and unaddressed requests to cancel products or services. Credit and debit cards, along with personal loans, represent 73.1% of these complaints. Major banks cited with high complaint volumes include BBVA, Banorte, Banamex, Banco Azteca, and Santander.
In Spain, the Ministry of Economy plans to launch the Financial Client Defense Authority in September. This new body aims to unify the complaint processes currently managed separately by the Bank of Spain, the CNMV, and the Directorate General of Insurance. The authority is designed to provide a single point of contact for consumers, offering free dispute resolution for claims under 20,000 euros without requiring court intervention. The goal is to resolve conflicts within a maximum of 90 days and reduce judicial litigation related to financial malpractice.
