Banking fees in France rise amid transparency concerns
Banking costs in France have seen an average increase of 2.7% between April 2025 and April 2026, according to the Observatoire des tarifs bancaires. To avoid unexpected expenses, consumers are advised to look beyond advertised zero-euro offers and carefully examine fee schedules, specifically regarding account maintenance, card usage, overdrafts, and international transactions.
Data from the Banque de France as of April 1, 2026, indicates that out of 102 studied institutions, only 10 offered free account maintenance fees, including six online banks. Financial experts recommend reviewing the pricing brochure and official documents, such as the tariff information document and the annual statement of banking fees, to understand the specific conditions required to qualify for free services.
