Banking fraud and theft reported in Salt Lake and Meerut
Two separate banking incidents involving fraud and theft have been reported in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
In Salt Lake, Kolkata, a woman named Mamata Singhi filed a police complaint after approximately 1.5 crore rupees worth of gold jewelry vanished from a joint bank locker. The complainant stated the locker was last accessed in December, but upon opening it on August 24, the jewelry boxes were missing. The victim has raised concerns regarding bank security and suggested that a duplicate key may have been used, as she maintains possession of the original.
In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, authorities discovered over 1,300 counterfeit notes within an Axis Bank currency chest. The seized notes include denominations of 500, 200, 100, and 50 rupees. Investigations revealed that some notes appeared to have been cut and taped back together. The currency chest serves 186 bank branches, and police are currently investigating how the fake currency entered the system. Three special investigation teams have been formed to trace the source of the notes and determine if there is a connection to a recent large-scale counterfeit currency case in Saharanpur.
