Financial institutions and central banks are highlighting new technologies and best practices for card users. Erste Bank und Sparkassen in Austria have introduced a limited-edition LED debit card for youth accounts. The card utilizes ‘energy harvesting’ technology, using an antenna to capture electromagnetic waves from payment terminals to power an LED light without the need for a battery or internal power source.

Regarding international travel, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank advises travelers to use debit cards rather than credit cards for cash withdrawals within the Eurozone to avoid fees. Outside the Eurozone, fees typically apply to both card types, though credit cards often incur higher costs and minimum transaction charges. Experts also recommend paying in the local currency rather than Euros during transactions to avoid poor exchange rates and suggest using geo-control functions to prevent skimming fraud.
