Banking leaders address digital fraud and financial education in Latin America

Financial institutions and authorities in Latin America are addressing the challenges of digitalization, focusing on fraud prevention and financial education. In Colombia, ahead of the 60th Asobancaria Banking Convention, the company Koin released a study on the evolution of online commerce in the region. The report highlights that online purchase approval rates in Latin America are lower than in North America due to high rates of false positives, where legitimate transactions are rejected. Koin advocates for the use of artificial intelligence to identify fraud in milliseconds to minimize both chargebacks and the loss of legitimate sales.

In Mexico, representatives at the Fifth Financial Education Congress emphasized that digitalization democratizes access to the financial system. Officials noted that while digital tools increase transparency, Mexico still maintains a high reliance on cash, with approximately 80% of transactions over 500 pesos conducted in cash. Discussions also touched upon the necessity of providing diverse financial products to support small business growth and sustained economic development.
