Banking sector faces risks from AI fraud and communication gaps

Financial leaders and industry reports are highlighting growing risks and shifting strategies within the digital banking sector. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), warned at the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings that sophisticated AI-driven fraud could undermine public confidence in formal financial institutions. Georgieva noted that a loss of trust might lead individuals to revert to keeping physical cash at home to avoid systemic risks.

Complementing these concerns, a report by MoneyLIVE in partnership with Quadient suggests that retail banks may be reaching diminishing returns by simply adding more digital communication channels. The report argues that competitive advantage is shifting away from feature-rich mobile applications toward the intelligence and proactivity of customer interactions. To improve engagement, banks are encouraged to move from reactive, compliance-led notifications to proactive, real-time communication powered by integrated data and generative AI.
