Banking security: Behavioral protection and transaction monitoring

Financial institutions are increasingly implementing behavioral protection to defend against cybercriminals. This technology analyzes how a user interacts with their device—such as typing speed, mouse movements, screen scrolling patterns, and the angle at which a phone is held—to detect unauthorized access. Crucially, this system is contextless; it does not monitor the content of messages, passwords, account numbers, or specific transaction details like amounts or recipients.

Separately, banks utilize security systems to monitor transactions for signs of money laundering and terrorism financing. Beyond transaction amounts, banks analyze the frequency, recipient, and history of operations. Users are advised to avoid using joke descriptions in transfer titles that might suggest criminal activity, as automated systems and bank employees lack the private context of the sender and receiver. Unusual patterns, such as frequent small transfers that appear to be splitting a larger transaction, may trigger additional scrutiny and reporting to the General Inspector of Financial Information.
