Venezuela banking sector faces holiday closures and credit warnings
Venezuela's banking sector faces upcoming changes due to both regulatory shifts and scheduled holidays. The Superintendency of Banking Institutions (Sudeban) has announced that all public and private bank branches will be closed on Monday, September 14, in observance of the Day of the Virgin of Coromoto. While physical branches will be closed, electronic services such as mobile banking, ATMs, and online platforms will remain operational.
Separately, economist Asdrúbal Oliveros has raised concerns regarding recent measures by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV). He noted that increased costs associated with reserve requirements and higher minimum rates are making financial intermediation more expensive. Oliveros suggests these moves aim to absorb liquidity and curb exchange rate pressures in anticipation of increased public spending and a projected decrease in foreign currency availability for September.
In local commercial news, Banco del Tesoro and VE Pagos concluded a specialized banking operation in Guatire, Miranda state, aimed at facilitating account openings and point-of-sale terminal acquisitions for the productive sector.
