Banks tighten AI financing as global interest rates rise

Banks and investors are becoming increasingly cautious regarding the massive capital requirements for artificial intelligence development. Michael Roberts, head of corporate and institutional banking at HSBC Holdings, noted a healthy dose of skepticism as rising interest rates and bond yields increase the cost of capital for AI infrastructure. This shift comes as global markets face volatility following a decline in semiconductor stocks.

Simultaneously, Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh indicated that central banks globally are moving toward synchronized monetary tightening to combat inflation. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Warsh emphasized that economies cannot remain unaffected by this international trend toward stricter monetary conditions. He declined to provide specific guidance on future Fed interest rate decisions, suggesting that investors should focus on economic data rather than forward guidance.
