Bankura murder case sparks political allegations in West Bengal

Ashutosh Ranka, a leader of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), has accused the West Bengal government of using fear and pressure to suppress political opposition. The allegations follow the death of Mafik, the father of CJP worker Sheikh Abdul Hafiz, in Bankura district.

According to CJP, Mafik was attacked by individuals identified as BJP workers on August 13 in Karisunda village after he filmed the poor condition of a local government school as part of the ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign. He reportedly died two days later from his injuries. While the CJP claims the attack was politically motivated, Bankura police stated that Mafik had sustained minor injuries and denied that the wounds were fatal.

Eight individuals have been arrested, including three named accused and five suspects, who have been placed in police custody for eight days. The police have deployed an officer to ensure the safety of the victim's family, though local residents and CJP leaders have expressed concerns regarding the speed and impartiality of the investigation.
