Bannau Brycheiniog National Park faces water shortages and fly-tipping

Bannau Brycheiniog National Park is facing significant environmental and safety challenges following a period of hot, dry weather and increased visitor misuse. Authorities have issued warnings regarding dangerously low water levels at Keepers Pond, also known as Pen-ffordd-Goch Pond. The reduction in water levels is attributed to significant use by fire services to combat a 400-hectare wildfire near Llangynidr Reservoir, exposing hidden hazards on the pond bed.

Simultaneously, park wardens have reported a rise in fly-tipping and littering, describing recent incidents as some of the worst seen. Near Llyn y Fan Fawr, staff discovered abandoned camping equipment, including tents, chairs, and BBQs, alongside maggot-infested food and human excrement. Park officials have emphasized that such behavior constitutes fly-tipping rather than wild camping and noted that littering increases the risk of wildfires during drought conditions.
