Banned Books Week events launch to combat rising censorship
Banned Books Week, observed from October 4 to 11, is seeing increased activity as organizations and libraries work to combat rising censorship. According to the American Library Association, 4,235 unique titles were challenged in 2025, marking the second highest number ever recorded.
To mark the occasion, approximately 400 participating stores and libraries are hosting events such as audiobook walks, postcard writing, and book swaps. In Seattle, the library system is hosting letterpress book art events with Partners in Print. Various organizations, including PEN America and the American Library Association, continue to highlight the importance of free and open access to information in response to legislative efforts in the US House and Senate that aim to restrict reading freedoms.
