Argentina Senate advances BCRA reform amid gold reserve dispute

The Argentine Senate has issued a favorable report on the reform of the Central Bank (BCRA) Organic Charter. The project, supported by the government of Javier Milei, aims to narrow the BCRA's mandate to the preservation of currency value, removing objectives such as economic development and employment. It also seeks to prohibit the Central Bank from directly financing the National Treasury to combat inflation.

During the legislative debate, BCRA President Santiago Bausili defended the reform and addressed questions regarding the bank's gold reserves. Bausili stated that a portion of the gold was moved to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Switzerland in 2024 to convert lower-quality bars into higher-liquidity assets. However, Senator Juliana Di Tullio challenged this testimony, accusing Bausili of lying and claiming the gold is physically located at the Bank of England in London.

Adding to the controversy, the Auditoría General de la Nación (AGN) clarified that its specific audit regarding the traceability of the gold reserves sent abroad has not yet been concluded. The AGN noted that the process was delayed because the BCRA took over a year to provide the necessary documentation.
