Banshidhar Pratihary exhibition opens at Jehangir Art Gallery
A seven-day exhibition featuring the works of 97-year-old Odia artist Banshidhar Pratihary is currently on display at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. Pratihary, a recipient of the Dharmapada award, is recognized for the mystical quality of his paintings. He studied fine arts at Visva-Bharati’s Kala Bhavana in Shantiniketan under prominent figures of Modern Indian Art, including Nandalal Bose, Dhirendra Krishna Deb Barman, and Ramkinkar Baij.
The exhibition was attended by art historian and collector Pheroza Godrej. In addition to Pratihary’s work, the event showcases paintings by Aashima Mehrotra, a self-taught artist and civil servant. Mehrotra’s work, which draws from nature and travel, was developed under the guidance of Veer Munshi and Banshidhar Pratihary. Her painting, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, was recently selected for the 64th National Exhibition of Art by the Lalit Kala Academy.
