Banská Bystrica begins major bridge and landmark renovations
Banská Bystrica is undergoing several significant infrastructure and landmark renovations. Starting September 28, 2026, the bridge on Mládežnícka Street, which connects the Radvaň and Fončorda districts, will be completely closed for reconstruction. Following a technical diagnosis that revealed significant deterioration of the central pillar, the contractor, SMS, will remove the entire pillar and construct a new one. Demolition is scheduled to begin on October 1, with the most intense work occurring over the first weekend of October.
Simultaneously, the city is beginning restoration work on the Clock Tower (Hodinová veža) on Námestie SNP, starting September 28. The project aims to improve safety and accessibility, particularly during winter, by installing copper heating cables under the walkway to prevent ice formation. The wooden flooring will be replaced with more durable composite wood-plastic boards, and the wooden doors will be restored. During the approximately two-month construction period, the observation walkway will be inaccessible to the public, though the tower will remain open on weekends as a tourist information center. Efforts may also be made to repair the non-functional eastern clock face.
