Banská Bystrica to host Slovak Folk Costume Day with 1,500 performers
The ninth annual Slovak Folk Costume Day will take place in Banská Bystrica, featuring over 1,500 performers. The event aims to connect folklore, dance, song, and traditional crafts.
This year's theme focuses on three elements that shaped national identity: work, faith, and mining. Because the event coincides with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the program includes a solemn service at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, followed by a procession through the historic center toward SNP Square.
In addition to performances by dozens of folklore ensembles from various Slovak regions, visitors can observe traditional crafts and rare regional costumes. The event will conclude with a gala evening broadcast by STVR. The celebration also marks several anniversaries, including the 45th anniversary of the Prvosienka Children's Folklore Ensemble and the 90th anniversary of the Očovan Folklore Ensemble.
Due to the festivities, several traffic restrictions have been implemented in Banská Bystrica, including closures on Štefan Moyzes Square and Kapitulská Street.
