Banská Štiavnica: Slovak city's legacy in mining and engineering

Banská Štiavnica, located among the volcanic hills of Slovakia, serves as a significant historical center for mining innovation and scientific advancement. The city’s legacy is rooted in its geological wealth, specifically its deposits of gold and silver derived from ancient volcanic activity.

In 1762, the city established the continent’s first academy of mining and forestry, cementing its role as a technical knowledge hub. To overcome geological challenges, engineers developed a complex system of artificial reservoirs known as ‘tajchy’, which facilitated continuous production.

Due to its historical and architectural importance, the municipality is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city’s urban landscape features a mix of Renaissance and Baroque palaces alongside robust defensive fortifications.
