Banten province commemorates historical regional origins
The Banten province in Indonesia commemorates its anniversary on October 4, highlighting the historical origins of its regional names. The province was established in 2000 from parts of West Java, building upon a long history as a trading hub and the Banten Sultanate.
Historical sites such as Banten Girang near present-day Serang serve as early markers of the region's identity. The name 'Tangerang' is believed to stem from 'tenggeran' or 'tanggeryang', referring to a boundary marker established by Pangeran Soegiri near the Cisadane River. Meanwhile, the name 'Serang' is thought to originate from a Sundanese term meaning 'paddy field'.
