Bantul traders report declining sales amid new meal program
Traders at the Bantul Kota People's Market in Indonesia report a significant decline in customers, with some seeing a 50 percent drop in visitors. Vendors, particularly those selling food for school children, attribute this downturn to the implementation of the 'Makan Bergizi Gratis' (Free Nutritious Meal) program, which has altered local food purchasing habits. This decline in foot traffic is compounded by rising wholesale prices for staples such as vegetables and meat.
In response to these economic challenges, the Bantul Regency Government is launching an initiative to encourage Civil Servants (ASN) to shop at traditional markets at least once a month. Fenty Yusdayanti, Assistant for Economy and Development, acknowledged the trend of declining visits, noting that some daily markets have seen decreases of up to 30 percent as consumers shift toward more convenient, accessible, or 24-hour retail options. Beyond mobilizing civil servants, the local government is exploring thematic market events to increase consumer interest and revitalize traditional trading hubs.
