Banxico reports over 122,000 counterfeit banknotes in first half of 2026

The Banco de México (Banxico) reported that 122,784 counterfeit national banknotes were received for analysis during the first half of 2026. Preliminary data indicates that the 500-peso bill was the most frequently counterfeited denomination, accounting for 62,052 pieces—more than half of the total identified.

Other significant denominations included 26,733 pieces of the 100-peso bill and 26,021 pieces of the 200-peso bill. The 1,000-peso bill accounted for 3,683 pieces, while the 50-peso bill saw 3,527 pieces and the 20-peso bill saw 768 pieces. In terms of coins, 60 allegedly counterfeit pieces were reviewed, with the 10-peso coin being the most common.

Banxico noted that these figures represent only the items submitted for analysis and may not reflect the total amount of counterfeit money in circulation. Authorities advise individuals who suspect they have a counterfeit note to avoid using it and instead deliver it to a banking institution to be sent to the central bank for official review.
