Banyana Banyana begins Olympic qualifying against Madagascar

South Africa’s women’s national football team, Banyana Banyana, is beginning its quest to return to the Olympic Games. The team faces Madagascar in the second round of the 2028 CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The first leg, scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2026, will be played behind closed doors at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. Although the match is being held in South Africa because Madagascar lacks an internationally recognized stadium suitable for the fixture, Madagascar is officially designated as the home team. The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed the decision to play without spectators followed a specific request from Madagascar.

Supporters will be permitted to attend the return leg, which will also take place in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, October 13. Coach Desiree Ellis emphasized the importance of qualifying for global events to provide essential experience for younger players, noting that the team has missed the last two Olympic Games.
