Banyuwangi to host Gandrung Sewu dance event at night for the first time
The Gandrung Sewu colossal dance event in Banyuwangi, East Java, will be held at night for the first time in 14 years on October 24. This change in schedule aims to provide a new experience for tourists and spectators while allowing the cultural icon to adapt to modern times.
Supported by the state-owned aviation and tourism holding company InJourney, the performance will feature more than 1,000 dancers. To enhance the nighttime visual experience, dancers will utilize phosphorus elements combined with specialized lighting technology, creating a unique visual effect while maintaining the traditional essence of the Gandrung dance.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani stated that the collaboration with InJourney serves as new energy to strengthen the local arts, culture, and tourism ecosystem, emphasizing that tradition can evolve and adapt without losing its identity.
